Job Description & Primary Responsibilities:

Poultry Veterinarians prevent, diagnose, treat and research illnesses in food production animals such as cattle, swine, poultry and fish. They monitor animal performance and provide regular feedback via performance management reports. They provide technical expertise in health management, including biosecurity, disease identification and prevention

Responsibilities: Poultry Veterinarians are responsible for ​providing health care for livestock and possibly laboratory animals, examining animals to determine nature of illness or injury, diagnosing and treating injuries, monitoring animal performance and provide regular feedback, providing technical expertise in health management, researching new diseases, medicines and procedures, mentoring veterinarian technicians regarding veterinarian medicine and animal related illnesses, testing and vaccinating, preventing and controlling contagious animal diseases, ensuring sanitary measures before, during and after all procedures, euthanizing animals when necessary, and providing preventative care to maintain animal health.

Education Requirements:

Recommended High School Courses:
  • Agriculture Education
  • Science (Animal, Biology, Chemistry)
  • Mathematics
Education/Training:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  • Certifications for Therapy, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, or Neurology can be considered
