Job Description and Overview

Mushroom Growers/Production Managers are responsible for utilizing advanced biological science and climate-control technology to oversee the efficient, safe, and high-yield production of mushroom crops. Their main goal is to manage the delicate lifecycle of fungi—from substrate preparation and spawning to pinning and harvesting—ensuring a continuous supply for retail or wholesale markets. They oversee growing room staff, train harvesters in proper selective-picking techniques, and manage the strict sanitation protocols required in commercial facilities. Additionally, they are responsible for optimizing growing mediums (compost and casing) and monitoring automated climate systems. Mushroom Growers also act as the technical liaison for the operation, organizing crop trials for new strains or casing materials, and analyzing yield data to maximize the farm's profitability.

Responsibilities: Mushroom Production Managers are responsible for maintaining the strict, climate-controlled environments of the growing houses, precisely regulating parameters like temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and airflow to trigger specific growth stages. They make critical daily agronomic decisions regarding watering schedules, disease management, and crop pinning, while developing long-term production plans and budgets to ensure consistent weekly yields. These managers must implement rigid integrated pest management (IPM) programs to control common threats like phorid flies and green mold without compromising crop safety. They develop and maintain strong working standards on the farm by educating harvest crews, ensuring strict compliance with USDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regulations and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Furthermore, they must maintain deep industry awareness regarding automation, composting innovations, and labor-saving technologies by actively engaging with local Pennsylvania agricultural extensions and industry networks.
